Pictured at left left is the way I was cradling my baton as I was doing the arm moves.
You can see that my baton is held between my index and middle finger so I can easily bring the baton down and back up.

A saulte is often done before and after the time you march and the time you twirl.  As illustrated, you place your left hand on hips. You turn your wrist over so that your thumb is down and the ball of the baton is up.
